Who is Sego Engineering?

Sego engineering is owned and operated by Brian Johnson located in Reno, Nevada with licensure as a Professional Engineer in Nevada, Utah, Washington, and California.

Brian grew up in Winnemucca, NV and after graduating from Lowry High School, moved to Reno to get his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno. While in college, he began working as a draftsman and a designer in the HVAC industry and now has a total of 20 years experience in mechanical engineering. Most of this engineering experience has been in consulting engineering with part of his experience coming from working for local Reno companies such as Dinter engineering and MSA engineering. The rest of his consulting experience comes from working for Portland-based companies PAE Consulting and Glumac Engineering. Brian is additionally an advocate for the design-build delivery method with experience in design-build design as well as energy performance contracting working with Seattle-based company McKinstry. Brian has worked on a wide variety of projects mostly in the commercial market, but also in the residential and industrial markets as well. These projects include offices, healthcare projects, higher and lower education, food service, public sector projects and many others including sustainability focused projects as well as those with unique challenges such as historical buildings, breweries, fire fighting facilities, and compounding pharmacies. When not at work you will likely find Brian spending time with his family, or participating in some of his hobbies such as telecaster picking, fly-tying, fly-fishing, or some other outdoor related activity.

What does “Sego” mean?

Sego Engineering is named after the Sego Lily which is a wild lily endemic to the Western United States.

The Sego Lily is a beautiful flower whose name is derived from the Shoshone word for the flower and it can be found blooming in the Spring and early Summer throughout Northern Nevada and much of the Western United states. The flower is one that Brian experienced growing up in the high desert of Northern Nevada and the photo of the flower on this site was taken in 2023 on a short hike near Reno. On this particular hike, Brian was working through some challenges in his life and unexpectedly stumbled upon a patch of Sego Lilys in a particularly desolate patch of earth. This discovery was not only nostalgic, but it struck him as an inspirational metaphor that colorful new life may sprout out of difficult— even seemingly impossible— circumstances. This is the reason that the Sego Lily was chosen as the company’s moniker and was a joy to draw as a logo.

Note: Mental health is not to be taken lightly and relief from these challenges may sometimes require more than a hike in the mountains. If you or a loved one are struggling and need help, please consider the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline & Crisis Call Center—Text or Call: 988.
